A pair is not two bookings
The two center Malaysia vacation packages below are written as one trip apiece, not as two stays stapled together. One confirmation covers both towns. One set of dates covers both. The road between them is planned and paid for inside the same figure, and if the second town falls through, the whole thing is reworked rather than half of it.
That matters most on the day something moves. A washed out road, a closed room, a change of mind at the second town: with one trip there is one office to call and one set of arrangements to shift. With two separate stays there would be two, and the joining day between them would belong to neither.
Why only eleven of sixty six
Twelve towns can be paired sixty six ways. The office writes eleven of them. The peninsula carries a spine of high ground down its length, and most ways over it burn a day that ought to have been holiday: an early start, a long climb, a late arrival, nothing seen in between. The rest exist on the map. They are not worth your nights.
The eleven that survive share one thing: the joining day is short enough to be a morning, or interesting enough to be the reason you go. George Town to Taiping is under two hours. Kuala Lipis to Kota Bharu is most of a day on a slow line through forest, and people book it for the line itself.

The arithmetic, without a verdict
Here is how a pair is figured. Take what the first town costs on its own page. Take what the second costs on its own page. Add them. That sum is the pair. The road between the two towns is already inside one of those two numbers, because every entry on the single town list includes arrival and departure by land.
No amount goes on top for arranging the join. No amount comes off for taking the two at once. The figure is the sum, and that is the whole of the statement. We are not going to tell you what to make of it. Some readers see the arithmetic and take the pair. Others take the two towns as separate trips in separate years. Both are ordinary.
Asking for a twelfth pair
You can name any two of the twelve and we will look at it. Some of the fifty five we do not write turn out to be fine once a third night is added somewhere, or once the crossing is broken with a night in the middle, which makes it a different trip and priced as three towns rather than two.
Others we will turn down and say why. Kota Bharu with Melaka is the length of the country in one go, and there is no honest way to write it as five nights. When the answer is no, the office says so in writing and leaves the two towns on the single list where you can reserve them one at a time.
